Aeropress, the next generation coffee brewer
For all of us coffee lovers, nothing is better than waking up to that heavenly smell of coffee aroma from our brewers. What’s not to love? It’s healthy, it’s tastes good, and it fuels up our day! And if you’re a coffee lover, such as myself, you have heard of the new way to make coffee: AeroPress! Coffee professionals and other coffee lovers loves the smooth, rich flavour. While other coffee makers drip hot water on coffee grounds, in Aeropress, fine-ground coffee is placed in the bottom of the larger cylinder on top of a paper microfilter. And then hot water is poured over the coffee. The mixture is then stirred for 10 seconds before being pushed down by the plunger through the microfilter. Although this is the traditional method of brewing coffee using Aeropress, there is also the inverted method which we will discuss later on.

History and Discovery of AeroPress
AeroPress was invented by Aerobie president, Alan Adler, in 2005. Adler is an American known inventor. He had a wide variety of inventions from football with fins, flying rings and discs. This man is a genius. He discovered AeroPress when he was asked the question “What do you guys do when you just want one cup of coffee?” by Aerobie’s sales manager’s wife during the company’s team meal. Adler claims to be a “One cup kinda guy” and he has grown frustrated with his coffee brewer at home which makes 6-8 cups of coffee, a lot for a “one cup kinda guy”. So Adler set out to invent a new coffee machine which will only brew a single cup. Fast forward through the process, a few weeks after, he already had a prototype in hand! (What did I tell you, genius, eh?) He tried the prototype which is a plastic tube that used plunger-like action to compress the flavours quickly out of the grounds. And Eureka! He had made a brand-new, special brewed coffee. And the rest is history.
Move over, Kopi Luwak, the new best coffee in the world is here.
Unlike the regular brewing process, where the outcome of your copy can only be the same: strong, medium, light, in Aeropress, you make your own coffee strength and flavour! Different recipes for the brewing process are used. You can make your own recipe, or you can search the internet for one. (I mean, what is the use of the internet if you can’t search coffee recipes, right?) This is what makes it better than others. This AeroPress coffee maker and the coffee it brews defines you.
Process of Brewing
The process of brewing coffee using AeroPress is different amongst others. AeroPress is a tube-like plastic device which contains a Plunger, a seal, the Chamber, a filter cap, a filter holder, a scoop, a stirrer and a funnel. It’s simple, fast and easy. Your AeroPress set should have its own instruction box inside. If you haven’t got an AeroPress yet, let me enlighten you. You just remove the plunger and the cap from the chamber, then put a filter inside the cap and twist the cap back on the chamber. Here’s the fun part, get your favourite coffee mug and put the chamber on top of it. Now you put the ground coffee in the chamber, then pour in the water, stir for about 10 seconds, wet the rubber seal and insert the plunger in the chamber, and press downward. Ta-da! Watch the coffee pour down on your mug. See? Easy, fast and fun!
Reasons why AeroPress coffee tastes so good
Well, there’s a lot of reason for that, so we will give you a list, and let you decide for yourself.
- The process of filtering is so short, think 20 seconds max, it avoids the bitterness we get from long brewing processes such as drip brewing.
- It is smoother because total immersion permits extraction at a very moderate temperature.
- The air pressure gives a gentle squeeze to that last goodness from the coffee grounds, giving it a more enriched flavour.
- It has less acid. AeroPress brews acid levels are one-fifth that of regular drip brew.
The finished product
30 seconds brewing time and viola! Your coffee a la AeroPress! The finished product? A smoother, richer, and more aromatizing coffee you have ever had in your life. Better than the coffee you buy at the coffee shop down the street, better than the ones you used to make on your old coffee machine!
Why AeroPress is different from French Press
When the AeroPress first came out, it was compared to the French Press because of some similarities in characteristics. But here is why they differ:
-
AeroPress offers a faster brewing process.
- AeroPress uses air pressure which improves extraction of flavour.
- AeroPress uses paper and filters while French press uses coarser wire or nylon mesh filter
- AeroPress uses fine grind coffee, while French Press requires coarse grind.
AeroPress versus other brewing method
- Espresso Machines- as much as we love the coffee brewed form espresso machines in our local coffee houses, taste-tests among coffee lovers proved that AeroPress coffees tastes better than the brew from their Espresso Machines. Why, you ask? As mentioned above, AeroPress’ filitering process is quick and under a moderate temperature, which avoids the bitter result we get from longer brewing under high temperature. Another reason why AeroPress kicks Espresso Machine’s butt? It doesn’t require hard maintenance! While Espresso Machines need to be disassembled before cleaning and descaling caustic chemicals, the AeroPress machines can almost clean themselves! Not to mention AeroPress is much cheaper than Espresso Machines.
- Drip Brewing – Drip Brewing is the process of passing hot water through the bed of coffee grounds. Too much hot water results to bitterness. Along the process, the water filters downward through the bed of coffee grounds where it becomes too cool, making the extraction weak. In this brewing process the ground are not extracted uniformly. On the other hand, using AeroPress won’t cause you these problems. The gentle pressure from AeroPress makes the process short and sweet all while giving the coffee grounds the same water temperature.
- Pod Brewers- Pod Brewing is also a new coffee brewing process. But unlike AeroPress, it is pricey. The price ranges from $60-$100 dollars. And it has been reported that it is difficult to get the coffee to taste right using this brewer.
AeroPress Paper Versus Filter Discs
Now if you are already using your very own AeroPress at home, you know that there are two types of filter you can use. And a lot of speculations have been made over which filter is better. The first and traditional one is the paper filter, which is a thin parchment-like paper. And then the Stainless steel disc filter. Some say the disc gives the coffee a richer flavour, while others say they prefer paper. And whether the first one is better than the last, we will let you decide!
Methods of Brewing
As I have mentioned earlier, they are two methods of brewing coffee with AeroPress. The Traditional Method and the Inverted Method. I will explain the method further and let you decide which works for you best.
Traditional Way of Brewing with AeroPress
During the traditional process of brewing with AeroPress, the coffee grounds are placed on top of the filter beneath the chamber. Then hot water usually 75-85 degrees celcius, are poured on the chamber. The amount of water depends on how much cup of coffee you will make. Stir the coffee for about 10 seconds, then push the plunger downwards. (See the picture below)
Inverted Way of Brewing coffee with AeroPress
Inverted, hence the name, is done in an upside-down fashion. In this method, you will leave the filter screwed off and insert the plunger into the chamber up to mark four and turn the AeroPress upside-down. Now you add the coffee ground in the chamber, next goes the water, give it a good stir, screw the filter back with the paper filter inside. Once the process is done, the AeroPress chamber is turned right-side-up again and you can now plunge your coffee in a mug. See the picture for clarification.
